Every year, the Atkinson Charitable Foundation spends approximately $2.2 million in charitable disbursements to further our mission to promote social and economic justice. But where do the financial resources to sponsor those projects come from?
The Foundation has adopted mission-based investment policies to align our investments with our values. This means that the Foundation pursues its mission not only through its program work, but also through how it conducts its investment policies.
In partnership with the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE), the Foundation is currently engaging with companies in its portfolio whose core business appears to rely on contingent work or precarious employment. We want to reinforce with these companies the objectives of the Foundation and the kind of work that we support. The latest report from SHARE highlights improved employment practices by some Canadian commercial real estate companies. The bottom line matters. And our bottom line includes the pursuit of social justice.
